Is shopping your thing? If so, then one pass down Sullivan Street is all you’ll need to whet your appetite! You’ll find many cozy shops tucked into the buildings along our main street containing a wide range of items such as antiques, pets, gifts, gardening needs, toys, and a myriad of other things. While you’re shopping, be sure to stop in any of Wurtsboro’s restaurants, coffee houses, or cafes to fuel up! Also, don’t forget the shopping to be found in Wurtsboro off the beaten path. If water sports are your thing then you’re sure to find your calling on one of the many lakes in the area. Activities such as rowing, sailing, swimming, water skiing, windsurfing, ice fishing, and more are all within your grasp.
For the nature lover, no visit to Wurtsboro would be complete without a stop at the Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area. Located about 2½ miles south of the village, this 3,000 acre preserve is a great place to spend an afternoon with a loved one and a picnic basket! Here you’ll discover the real definition of the word serene as you drink in the beauty of the scene before you. Depending on the time of year, you can head out in your canoe or kayak to explore the nooks and crannies of this unique body of water, or fish from one of the many locations around the Kill. For the birdwatcher, you’ll be pleased to know that there are some 220 species of birds that use the Basha Kill throughout the course of a year providing you with a great opportunity to add these birds to your life list
There are also many trails to hike along the Kill, including the abandoned Delaware
& Ontario railroad bed where you may have a first-
In the winter, a visit to the Kill and a bit of patience will almost guarantee you the opportunity to spot an American Bald Eagle, our national symbol. Eagles, both fully grown and immature, sometimes feed in the Basha Kill’s open water during winter.
